Requirements to be a Habitat Home Owner:

Applicants for Habitat for Humanity houses in Glynn County must:

  • be legal residents of the United States and of Glynn County for at least one year

  • not be able to acquire conventional home mortgage financing

  • live presently in overcrowded, unsafe, unsanitary or substandard shelter

  • have a steady income from either employment or benefits sufficient to meet the household’s expenses plus a monthly mortgage obligation and the household’s total income falls between low income limits based on the number of persons in the household

  • be physically able and willing to voluntarily participate in the construction of someone else’s Habitat house and then participate in the construction of your own house, for a total minimum of 150/300 sweat equity hours (single adult or two adult applicants), working with Habitat’s construction volunteers whenever they work on your house until it is completed unless prohibited by your employment schedule or illness

  • make a down payment of three hundred dollars ($300) prior to occupying your Habitat house, half of which, $150.00, must be paid prior to the start of construction on your house

  • be willing to maintain your Habitat house in a fashion to reflect positively on Habitat for Humanity and to express your gratitude for the volunteers who help build your house

  • submit a signed application with requested information provided entirely and a photocopy of your most recent federal income tax return

  • agree to allow Habitat for Humanity to secure a criminal background check, a financial history and credit report and verify information you provide on your application

  • have a credit history free of bankruptcy, repossession and/or credit charge-offs for the past three years

Housing Applications are available at Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County  at 41 Glynn Plaza in Brunswick, Georgia, weekdays 8:30am to 4:30pm.  The office is located in the Glynn Plaza Shopping Center at the corner of Altama and Community Roads behind McDonalds and Walgreen's.

Habitat’s Family Selection Committee, comprised of real estate, financial and legal professionals who volunteer their time and expertise, reviews completed Housing Applications on a monthly basis and performs a credit history check. Successful applicants will be contacted for a brief home visit to verify your present living conditions. Following the home visit, the Committee may recommend approval to Habitat’s Board of Directors if the applicant meets all of the requirements for Habitat housing.

Approved Candidates are placed on a construction schedule and construction will begin when a building lot and financial sponsorship is secured by Habitat and the candidate fulfills the down payment and sweat equity requirements.
